post-holiday updates.

so, our christmas went pretty well.  The Husband went to a christmas party on the 23rd, which resulted in him being exhausted christmas eve, which resulted in him falling asleep rather early, which resulted in me having a festive holiday breakdown and telling him if he couldn’t manage to give a shit about anything he could just fucking move out already.  …and following it up with an apology about 15 minutes later.  so, basically, not caving to holiday psychosis is still a yearly struggle, but one I feel like I’m making progress with.

The Husband got me a new tarot deck, which was exactly what I wanted, my mom got me a mixer, and The Wizard made me some adorable ornaments.  the Squid pretty much laid around and was cute, and puked on herself.

I hooked it up with the Adult Swim in a Box boxed set for The Husband, Sorry Sliders for The Wizard (what can I say?  my son loves board games.) and an Icebat uglydoll for The Squid.  they were all quite psyched.  I made aprons for my mom and a couple friends, and was quite pleased with the results.  I got a starting pattern out of an old BUST, but ended up pretty much doing my own thing anyway.

The Husband got The Wizard both a wrist rocket and a freaking pellet gun.  which I initially tried to boycott, until he made the selling point of: it is something that will only be used with supervision, and would I prefer he learn gun safety at home, or at a friends house?  so, even with my discomfort with guns, I have to agree, and then got the joy of explaining, when anyone asked what he got for christmas, and my Wizardly one joyfully announced “A RIFLE!”

we also started a new tradition of mac-n-cheese for christmas dinner, which was The Husband’s idea, and I figured since so much effort is put into christmas brunch, it’s nice to get a break in the evening and just play games and kick it.

here’s my recipe for Gingerbread Waffles, thanks to rachael ray.  I halved the recipe and still had leftovers, so as a warning: these waffles are incredibly filling.

Gingerbread Waffles

in one bowl mix together:

1 1/2 cups flour

2 tsp baking powder

1 tsp cinnamon

1 tsp ground ginger

dash nutmeg

dash salt

in another bowl beat 1/3 cup brown sugar and 2 eggs until fluffy, and then add 1/2 cup pumpkin puree, 2/3 cup milk, 1/4 cup mollasses, and mix together.  mix in 3 tbsp melted butter, and then add your wet ingredents to dry ingredients, mixing until just worked together.  don’t overmix, and be careful when you put these on your waffle iron because they expand more than regular waffles, and if you’re real cool like me you’ll end up with batter all over your counter.

hope everyone had a good holiday…

as a note, my gift from Santa (ahem) was a nifty knitter set, which I review as being rediculously easy, and surprisingly fun.  so woot.

oh, and another review: Sorry Sliders is a pretty kickass game.  you can’t play it with all that many people (4 tops), but with our small family, that works well.  it’s endlessly customizable, and it’s almost as much fun to figure out all the different ways you can play it as to actually do so.

    my new favorite game…Scrabble Slam.
it’s a card game all about 4 letter words, which you change one at a time.
i.e. slam becomes swam, which could become swan, and it’s usually played fast…
but i’m sure Israel could get it.

Yeah, and check out the “way to make spelling cool” props. the only problem is being my family and four letter words… my internal monologue is gonna be rolling along somewhere like: “he’s heard it a million times before… it’s not like he even tries to sing along with our daily allotment of mc chris…”
but definitely sounds like one we’re gonna have to try. we’ll make an adult version for “grown-up words”.
